I would love to send my sponsered child books to read! I am in my last year in school to become a teacher, so as you can imagine, I believe in the overwhelming benefits of reading. I just think that it could help him learn about not only the world around him, but also inspiring people, the opportunities that he can have, and to become a lifelong learner. With that being said, I know that there are some strict rules for sending books. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can send larger books while still meeting these guidelines? I wonder if I could photocopy the pages (with permission, of course), and send it to him in multiple letters? That way it can still meet the size requirement, while making it look less valuable. Any ideas?

I don't think you would need permission to photocopy as long as you aren't selling the copies.  If you don't want to rip out pages and send a few at a time then the photocopy and send a chapter at a time or something would probably work.  Just keep in under 1/4" thick and it should be ok.

Additional question, since I've been wondering about sending books, too: If you're sending a thicker book in pieces, how can you make sure the pages don't fall apart? Do you tape the edges?

I have sent a lot of torn-apart books which have arrived in good shape in India and Kenya.  I staple them together in segments, all less than 1/4" and more like 10 page thick (since my stapler is not very good) sections.  My kids have enjoyed them.  Sent The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Max Lucado's Cast of Characters and several books about Bible study.

Do you send books in their language? Is there enough people to interpret if they are under reading age or do not read and write english?

Hi Gayla! You are welcome to send books that are already in the native language. However, we also have local translators who will translate all of your letters and booklets for you. :)

Hi Susan, the guidelines say no books and booklets
http://www.compassion.com/letter-writing/tips-for-mailing-small-gifts.htm
which I think is too strict. I am trying to send some thin booklets.
Are Christian tracts ok too?

Why not just email them?

Email may still pose a problem due to time constraints at the centers. Interpreter would need to read to all the children...guess that would not be very personal and it would interfere with their curriculum...Someone will come up with a solution...With God ALL things are possible.
What about a Christmas or Birthday Gift sent to Compassion asking them to buy a book for your child. I requested special items for my child in the past when I sent their Birthday gift.

Books and booklets must fit within the guidelines : paperback or cover removed, less than 8"x10" and less than 1/4" thick, in child's language.  If they look like they can be resold they could be stolen while going through customs so they ask that you remove the cover.  I did send paperback with cover a few days ago and will be waiting to see if it actually gets through since I left cover on.  I marked through ISBN barcode and punched some holes through the barcode in the back cover.  The artwork on the front cover was just so great that I didn't want to rip it off.  I will be disappointed if the cover has to be ripped off, but that will still be ok since the artwork inside is also very good.

Hi Chak! I am aware that our list says no books or booklets. We have written this rule because it is very difficult to mail books and booklets. We have created these guidelines because we classify everything we send in the mail as a document. However, if you send books, we will do everything we can to get them through customs cheaply and safely for you.  As others have mentioned, sometimes if an item appears valuable, the item has a high probability of either being stolen, held up, or having a high tariff placed on it by the customs officials. This is why we will tear the covers off of books to make them appear less valuable. It is not our heart to be strict and limit what you can send with love to your sponsored children. Regrettably, we are limited to what we can reasonably get through customs quickly, safely, and as inexpensively as possible.

It might be quicker if you photocopied editions in your child's language, IF it's something common like Spanish. You could order the book in Spanish and send 1 chapter at a time, then the translator only has to look it over, not translate the whole thing which could take a while. Just a thought! :)

I am loving all of the ideas and suggestions you all have shared. So great!

tbmgvd, I would recommend staples or small amounts of string over tape because often tape looses  it's stickiness in the humid environments that our kids live in. Just a tip. :)
