In nearly every letter we receive from one of our kids in Ghana, he tells us how much he loves soccer --or rather, 'football'. :) His birthday is two months away, and we were wondering how we'd go about dictating that a new soccer ball be purchased with some of his birthday money. How much should we send to buy a soccer ball in rural Ghana?

Hi Haley! What a wonderful and kind way to bless your sponsored child on their birthday! I sponsor a little boy in Ethiopia who loves soccer too. That's such a great idea! To send a birthday gift to your child and request that it be used for a soccer ball, just log into your "My Account" and then click the button for Additional Giving and use the drop down menu for Birthday Gift to select the amount.

Then, in the checkout section, click the link that says "I have special instructions regarding this donation," and type in the box provided that this gift was intended for a soccer ball.

Please know that while Compassion will share your wishes with the family, the use of the gift is ultimately up to the family. If there is an urgent need at the time your gift is delivered, they may use your gift to meet that particular need they have at that time.

As far as how much to send, there is a list of items here that shows how much various items cost in Ghana. I don't see a soccer ball listed on there specifically, but most of the other items appear to be fairly similar to what they would cost here in the United States. I would imagine anywhere from $30-$50 would probably cover the cost of a soccer ball for your child. I hope that helps! :)
