One of our compassion kids recently lost his father. We would like to help but don't know whether any of the options available (like a gift) would be appropriate. Looking for input on whether help is appropriate, and if so what kind of help. Thanks.

Hi Janine, I am sorry to hear about your sponsor child's loss of their father.  A number of years ago I was in that situation with a girl I sponsored in Kenya (she has since graduated from the program) and I sent a family financial gift.   Currently sponsors are allowed to send up to $1,000 per calendar year, back then the largest gift allowed was $300.   A financial gift of any amount I am sure would be helpful and very appreciated.  If the gift is $60 or more the project will send a picture of what the family purchases with your gift.

Janine, I'm so sorry to hear that your sponsored child's father recently passed away. I know that it can be tough for impoverished families after the passing of a parent, particularly because they not only have the grief of losing a loved one but also the loss of income and livelihood. I normally recommend sending a sympathy card and a family gift to help with some of their expenses during this time. The student center will often step in to provide counseling, groceries for a time, and maybe even assist with the funeral expenses.
