May I send my child math worksheets or any other material with the Star Wars theme? Is it Ok even though it is about a war and characters have weapons? I found a great math workbook by brainquest, but it only comes in that theme. Please let me know if appropriate. It is for a 6 yr old boy in Bangladesh.

Hi Kristine,

it's great that you found something for our child, which can help him at school.

But I would only send it to him if he told you that he knows and likes starwars.

Otherwise it might be a bit too much of  war theme for a 6 year old who might not have regular access to TV, don't you think?

Best regards and God bless you.

Silke

I'm all for Star Wars, but, just personal opinion, here, the page on the left especially is a bit scary, so even if the kid watched a lot of TV, for a six year old, I would like something more fun.  There are millions of workbooks in the world to choose from, so I think if there is any question on things, that we are better to say no, and choose something else.

Thank you for your input. I should have paid attention to my first instinct. I wouldn't even be asking if I didn't already have some qualms about it. Thanks for helping me do the right thing. I love this forum. I will find something else for my boy!

Kristine, right as I was looking at your post and my wife walked by and said "Austin (our 6 year old son) has that book." :) He loves Star Wars and he will talk your ear off about all the characters. I was just going to say that was very thoughtful of you to consider that a child living in a different country might have a different view of war and weapons than our kids here. I might not have thought anything of it. We only sponsor a girl right now so we're not sending anything like that but I would really love for us to sponsor a little boy also and if we do I'll have to remember to be conscious of this sort of thing.

I've been able to visit some of my sponsor kids.On my trip to Honduras last year the pastor of one partner church provided a military escort for us to the neighborhood where they are located. We probably didn't need it but he believed we did.We had four soldiers with us and the pastor used did not use any Compassion funds to pay for it.

Violence is extreme in these countries. The pastor and his family were led by God to plant a church in this area about 18 years ago.The drug gangs had control and they beat his wife and killed his nephew. They began partnering with Compassion about 4 years ago and have about 260 kids in the program.Violence is way down in this area.

The drug gangs start recruiting kids at about age 12 and train to them transport drugs and even train them to kill rival gang members. Here's a video on Youtube. Type in Unreported World and look for the video El Salvador Child Asassins.

I was looking through the FB page and didn't see any. When we were at HO367 we saw the classroom they were adding on.
