I sponsor a child and would like to sponsor another, but am confused about a Compassion email I received asking for assistance to provide benefits to unsponsored children. I was under the impression that only sponsored children received benefits, and that's why sponsorship was so important. I'm wondering if everyone's contributions are perhaps just put in a communal fund to be shared with sponsored and unsponsored children alike. Does my gift really make a difference?

When I went on a sponsor tour a few years ago, the trip leader pointed out that it is difficult for them to get sponsors for unspecified children.  So they determine (or budget, so to speak) how many sponsors they will get, and let that many kids into the program.  Then they look for sponsors for them.  The fund for unsponsored children covers that gap between when they are accepted into the program and when they are sponsored.  Hopefully this makes as much sense to you as it did to me!

Sometimes sponsors can't sponsor for the entire duration the child is in the program, either, so the fund would also cover the time between one sponsor stopping and another beginning.  Once the children are in the program, they are committed to them!  It is part of each child being known, loved and protected.

Joanne, thank you so much for reaching out to us with your concern! Jennifer explained this very well (thank you, Jennifer!). When a child is first enrolled in Compassion's program, he or she starts receiving benefits right away out of the unsponsored children's fund. Once that child is sponsored, they no longer receive funds from that fund, but rather, from your sponsorship funds that are sent. The other major perk of having a sponsor is receiving letters! Children who are unsponsored do not get the gift of letters from a sponsor, which we know mean the world to these kids. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
