Wanted to share some of the most recent letter I received from my sponsored child!

I have been sponsoring a little girl in the Philippines for 12 years. I started sponsoring her when I was 13 (saving my money from babysitting, etc), and she was just 5 years old! I am now 25 and in medical school, and she is 18. In a sense, we've kind of grown up together over a decade now. It has been such a gift to develop an amazing relationship with her via our letters.

I just wanted to share some of what she wrote to me in her last letter because it gave me so much joy! Is there a private group on Facebook or something where sponsors can share this sort of thing?

Anyway, here's just a little part of what she wrote. She has become such an intelligent, loving young woman! I am just overwhelmed and beyond amazed by her.

"I cannot contain my happiness when I received your letter. I am extremely overwhelmed by your praises and I thank you for that. It is such a wonderful feeling to have someone supporting you and being proud of you for your achievements. I am truly grateful that you appreciate my efforts in school because you are one of those people who kept me striving hard to reach my dreams, and reading your letters gave me more reasons to continue what I started. By the way, I am so proud of you, too. As you watched me over the years, I also witnessed how you reached your goals one at a time. Finally, you are just a few years away from your greatest dream! You will be a doctor soon, and I can’t wait to read and see photos of you wearing your graduation dress. Please know that I will be one of those people who will be very proud of you when that time comes. And seeing you and your friends wearing your medical uniform sent volts of happiness and fondness to my heart. I also cannot wait to read your stories about your future patients and see how passionate you are in this field. I am amazed that we have been watching each other grow for 12 years now. That from a 13-year-old girl who wishes to be a doctor and treat cancer patients, and now you are just a few steps from becoming a doctor of medicine."

Hi Emily! Wow! What a beautiful representation of what it looks like to foster a meaningful relationship through years of love, support, and letter-writing! I teared up reading her sweet letter to you. It’s so obvious how much you two care for and support one another. I’m sure you both will never forget each other or the tremendous impact you’ve made in each other’s lives! From all of us here at Compassion, THANK YOU!

Hi Christina! I commented on Laura's post below -- she mentioned a Compassion Correspondents FB group for this kind of sharing. I'd love to join it. Can you help with this?

That is such a wonderfully encouraging letter! What a blessing to receive it! Thanks for sharing!

You asked if there is a private Facebook group for this type of sharing. There is a good one called Compassion Correspondents. You have to be invited by a member and approved by an administrator. Christina can probably help you join. :)

Hi Denise,
We would be happy to send this invite. However, to clarify, we need to send this to the email address you used to sign up with Facebook. This may or may not be the same one you use for Compassion. That part doesn't matter. It just must be the one attached to Facebook. Thank you so much for clarifying which one is correct!

Pam, it can take up to 4 months to receive the child's introduction letter.  (And at that, it is usually a letter written before the child even had a specific sponsor, telling you about them, etc.)  I'm so glad to hear you have written multiple letters however, because that will help get the letter flow back and forth going.  Every other month, children who have received a letter over the past couple of months sit down and write a letter responding to the received letters. (Some children are better than others at actually remembering and responding to the contents of the letter.)  It is a great idea to send encouraging letters to your child and keep writing instead of waiting to receive a letter before you respond to it.

I started out with Compassion thinking it was more like a pen pal relationship but have realized that, ideally, one does get close to their child, the relationship is more like mentoring.  I pour into the child love and encouragement and the Word of God and trust that God's word will not return void, even if I cannot directly see it in the letters.

(One thing to note: IF the child is out sick, away for some reason they might miss that every other month letter writing day and then it will be two MORE months before the next such day.)

Also, Sarah makes some great points on her comment here, which I also addressed in my response to your other comment. We are so thankful for your dedication to writing to and investing in the life of your sponsored child! Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you.
