Will I be notified if my sponsor child becomes ill or injured? Will I be allowed to help?
We recently had a visit with our child in the Dominican Republic and I heard her cough several times.. Later I started to wonder and worry. Would I be told? Would I be able to help?

Diane,

I so appreciate your love and concern for your child! Thank you for advocating for her! We provide full medical coverage as part of the program. Each student center provides regular medical checkups for all of the registered children. If the student center staff and social workers find that a child is sick or has gotten injured, they will take them to see a doctor, and even a specialist, if needed. If the child needs surgery, we will write up a proposal and find funding for it to make sure that the child gets the care that he or she needs. This is what our Medical Fund is for.

Your child could have something as simple as a common cold. However, the student center staff are trained to give each child individual attention and to watch for needs like this. They are usually very aware unless the child has not been communicating those needs. The field staff are trained to make sure each child is known, loved, and protected. If it is a case of the child being protected, the field staff may leave it up to the child to share with their sponsor if they should choose to do so. However,  if your child has a life threatening or life changing illness or injury, we will notify you of this situation.

How quickly are headquarters notified if a child has fallen to a life threatening or life changing illness or injury? How quickly would the sponsor be notified? I do feel that the information I receive in writing from her family is limited and I would surely want to know if something happens so I could pray appropriately and help financially if possible.

Life threatening or life changing illnesses or injuries are reported from the student center to the country office in your child's country. The country office reports this news within ten days to the Global Ministry Center (our headquarters)  and we will call the sponsor within seven days. We usually make several attempts if the child has passed away because we really want to speak with the sponsor personally and help them through such a difficult situation.
