I know Compassion tries to find them one but before they get a sponsor are they not admitted to the program and must wait for a sponsor? Same question for when a child loses a sponsor and one can't be found for him/her for a while.

Compassion has a Unsponsored Children's Fund. People donate to it to help the children that don't have sponsors. That way the children still get the benefits of sponsorship (except the very much loved and awaited for letters). If a child is dropped multiple times and had to drop out of the program and school each time, it would be extremely difficult for the child. That's why Compassion has that fund.
