Hi I'm new to Compassion and sponsoring children. I was wondering, when should I send my first letter? I'm eager to start writing her and my goal is to really send her one letter each month with little goodies in it like stickers and coloring pages etc but I don't know if I should first wait to receive her first letter, then start writing back or for me to send the first letter. Thanks!

Stephanie, I am a sponsor like you, my advice is don't wait to write your child. It may take a while to get that introductory letter (up to four months I believe) so in the meantime you could have written her several letters. I usually ask my kiddos a question or two about themselves in each letter so I can get to know them better. Happy writing and thank you for choosing to bless a child through your letters and sponsorship.

Hi Stephanie - Bless your heart for sponsoring a child! I love my sponsored children, and it has been such a great experience! I would not wait to write at all . . . Generally letters can run 2-4 months, so writing today, they may not receive it until May or June! I also write monthly as I know when they get that packet of letters for their project, I want to be sure my children (I write to 3) get a letter as often and as much as possible! :) God bless!

Welcome to the Compassion family, Stephanie! Donnalee and Heather are so kind and both gave you great responses from a sponsors perspective! I would also encourage you to get a letter sent of right away :). Your kiddo will know within the first month that you're her sponsor and will be so overjoyed to get her first letter from you, so the sooner the better!

I'm so encouraged that you have so much zeal and eagerness to get started on building a relationship with your child! And writing once a month sounds perfect! She will be so blessed receiving consistent words of encouragement from you and goodies like you mentioned!

I wanted to make sure you were aware that in addition to sending paper letters, also know that you can write using our online writing tool on your My Account through www.compassion.com. Just select "Write My Child' on the left side of the page when you log in and, Voila!

We also just recently came out with a new mobile app that allows you to send a quick note to your child from your phone so you can write to her wherever you are, whether it's the airport or work! You can learn more about this on our blog.

Enjoy this new journey and know that we're all here to help you out as you get started, and all along the way! Sponsorship is such a rewarding experience and you're investment in the life of your child, allows her to hear the gospel and know she's loved and treasured and that someone believes in her. It's life changing! :)

I agree with the others, definitely don't wait. I wrote my first letters right away. It takes time for the letters to get to CO, the child's country, get translated, then finally to the child's center. So I always got my first letter on its journey as soon as possible. Your sponsored child will be so excited to get it!

Hi Stephanie! We have the same name!
You can send your first letter at any time - I would recommend sooner rather than later. What I usually do is I write an online letter introducing myself and then when I get the child packet I also fill out that letter and mail it as well (since it may have ?s that you didn't share the first time or vis-a-versa). It does take a while to receive her first letter..Right no, it takes each letter approx. 2-3 months to reach the other person (however I heard that this may be shortened in the next year). When I was a new sponsor, someone shared this piece of info with me and it was very helpful-- they adviced that it can take up to a year for the "flow of communication" to get started (I have experienced anywhere from 8-12 months). I was also told and now also agree that you should not wait for a response to write your next letter.
Once a month is perfect also you can check out the second Friday wring cub page on Compassion international's Pinterest page it is full of ideas.
