I know that while they are younger they have templates that they fill out as letters, but at approximately what age to they start to send written letters? As in without a specific template to follow?

At age 9, your child will stop using the form letters. A tutor or parent may still help them write, as most children have a hard time writing letters until they are in grade 4.

Younger children, age three to eight, will correspond using age-appropriate
templates (with specific questions to answer). Younger children, age three to eight, will correspond using age-appropriate
templates. As children grow older, they will write on their own as they become more able and feel more confident doing so. The letter writing templates for older children, typically have more space for them to write as long as they would like.
