It's time to send a monitory birthday gift to our sponsored child. I'm feeling conflicted about it. Last year we sent a birthday gift and a family Christmas gift. Those gifts have never been mentioned by our child. I'm now wondering if he even receives our gifts?

Hi Spencer,

I can assure you your child is receiving the monetary gifts. The staff from compassion can help make sure the child mentions the gifts in his letter.

I'm another sponsor. I visited one of my children once and was really impressed with what I saw in the accounting of gifts. The employee brought her records to our day together, and besides all of the photos of gifts she had received over 8 years, there was an itemized list with the dollar amount for each item purchased. They even had the photo and list for gifts where I didn't send enough to receive a photo. Another child's records had a photocopied page with a series of photos describing the purchase of livestock at the market. In the end I received a single colour photo with one sheep and the child dressed in the new outfit she had purchased. The fact that they had more info on hand than I did showed me that they take accountability/documentation very seriously.

The children are always supposed to say thank you and tell you what they bought, and there is supposed to be a photo for gifts over $60. I get the photos most of the time (but it takes a while), and I find that in the thank yous the children don't always list everything. But the record-keeping I saw left me with no doubt about the child getting the gift.

(I look at all the places I've worked, and the number of times I didn't get what I was wanting or expecting from someone. Some people are just not good at writing or details. That's what I chalk it up to.)

I am also another sponsor and you should here that they got your gift and as stated above if the gift is $60 or more the center is supposed to send a photo.  If it has been six months you can send an inquiry to socialmedia@compassion.com   If you are on Facebook when you email the ladies that answer our questions you could request to be added to the group:  Compassion Sponsors/Correspondents Facebook Forum.  It is a fun group of sponsors and many ideas are shared and questions answered!

Spencer, I am so sorry that you haven't heard back from your child regarding the gifts you sent for birthday and Christmas. You should have heard back from now, but do rest assured that your child received your gifts. I will send an inquiry to get those checked on for you and request a list of the items that were purchased for both of them. It can take between six and eight weeks for us to hear back from the country office regarding these gifts, but we will be in contact with you as soon as we have received word from them.
