Hello! God placed it on my heart to start sponsoring another child through Compassion. After much prayer, I decided to sponsor a young lady who is 18. I am looking for ideas for my first letter to her. My biggest concern is that I am 24 and I do not want her to have any feelings that I am above her because I am able to sponsor her. Does anyone have any tips for my first letter to her?

Leah, That's great that God brought you two together! I don't think she will feel that way at all. :) I would first introduce yourself...tell her about you, your schooling, your job, etc. You could ask her what her plans are as she finishes up school or vocational training. Tell her you are honored to pray for her as God prepares her for the future, and you are excited to get to know her. I am sure once you start writing and the relationship builds, you will have no troubles!

Take care!

Congratulations Leah! I agree with Tammy. I don't think she will feel that way either. Just write from your heart. You could tell her how God brought you to her.

I have a friend who is a former Compassion child and his sponsor was only 6-8 years older than him, and he never had any feelings except for gratefulness and love to his sponsor. I think it's really cool! You could develop a big sister type of relationship.

I'm 26 and I sponsor older children. They write great letters! I agree with Tammy and Keeli, just write from your heart. Ask questions about her, tell her about yourself, and be a friend and big sister. :)

One of my 18 year old sponsor children drew an amazing picture for me!

Hi Leah, Also in my first letters I like to tell them where I live, and even include a simple map. I also send a photo of myself.
