My sponsored child gave a different birthday in his letter than is listed on my compassion account. Could there be a mistake? Which birthday is correct?

Hi Christie! What birthday does your child give you? Often times the month and the day are switched in the countries we work in. Our records show Oliver was born August 2, 2010. Does your letter say 2/8/10? This would be the same in that case:).

However, if it's totally different, there might be a mistake or we might have the incorrect birth date and we can inquire with Colombia to verify. In many cultures, birth dates are not considered to be of great significance. A mother and father may not know exactly what day their child was born when they register he or she with us or only the year and perhaps the month. So they might guess and then we find either a school record or birth certificate later that confirms the child's birth. It's possible also that your child just got confused. Either way, we're happy to verify the contradicting information with our field staff.

If your child is giving you a completely different birthday, please send us a copy of the letter you received so we can check on it for you :). You can email it to us at socialmedia@compassion.com
